Kenya Data Networks is a “Full Service, Data Communications Carrier” that was licensed by the CCK in January 2003 as a “Public Data Network Operator”. KDN is a local company and uses local expertise to build world-class infrastructure in Kenya. We are the leading company in the telecommunication industry having laid out and covered most of the country with fiber, ranking as the second largest IP network in Africa.

KDN invites entrepreneurship and supports the same – KDN has outsourced several of its functions like installations and maintenance at client sites. With this programs we have enabled several entrepreneurs to start companies and create employment
KDN has taken a social responsibility to build a National Fibre Optic ring for high end rural and urban delivery in its effort to provide universal access – KDN is investing over US $ 200 million to put fiber from to cover Kenya.
KDN is spreading its network to touch the lives of over 80 per cent of the Kenyan population using the Digital Village Network. This will enable the government and other service providers to bring their services closer to the people.

1. Carrier of Carriers
Infrastructure services to Mobile and fixed line operators, Gateway and last mile access solutions for the ISP market.
2. Corporate Carrier
We provide corporate clients with Wide Area Network solutions. Additionally we have started offering telephone services using VOIP service and a HOMEOFFICE solution as an extension of the office to the homes of the staff members.
3. Portal
We are developing a “shopping mall” concept for internet services where users get free access to the internet. Internet users will be able to communicate with each other (Voice and data) for free. Goods and services will be sold over this platform which will provide a trading platform and a payment system. Our guiding principle is to provide local content for free
4. Mass Market
We also do provide services to homes, small offices and universities. This is through our Butterfly brand
5. Distribution
We are working with the Digital Villages (as a Franchise Concept). Through this we generate adequate business cases for the franchise partners to sustain the business moreso in rural areas. We are therefore identifying products and services which are either KDN Service Related (PCs, Laptops etc) or are able to cross-market the Mass Market Brand of KDN.
6. Power Solutions
Using the expertise that we have gained in setting up base stations across the country, we have initiated Micro-Power generation plants and we will start selling power generated from this sub-station through from distributors’ services like Solar Power, Wind, Street Lighting, House Lighting, and Water Heating.
7. Hosting Centres
With our participation in the TEAMS and other Submarine projects, we shall extra and sufficient bandwidth to be used for Disaster Recovery Programs and Hosting services. This will not only be targeted at local clients but also international organisations.
8. Security Solutions/Traffic Management
We have set up a number of traffic monitoring cameras in some areas of Nairobi which will help people make informed decisions before leaving their houses or offices. We will extend this offering to include security cameras and fleet management systems.
9. Document Management
As the world moves to become a paperless society, and in line with environmentally friendly, KDN will soon offer a full service offering of scanning and archiving of documents to organisation effectively manage their documentation.
